BIOGRAPHY: Matilda Wainwright – “Tilly” to just about everyone in Glendale – is the lively, big-hearted owner of the village’s only B&B.
Originally from Oxford, Tilly arrived in Glendale at sixteen after a string of teenage misadventures led her parents to send her to live with her grandmother. It took time for her to adjust to village life, but under her grandmother’s guidance, she eventually found her footing. Even so, Tilly’s rebellious streak remained alive and well, and it wasn’t unusual for her to sneak boys in through her bedroom window while her grandmother was none the wiser.
At eighteen, her world shifted dramatically when she found herself unexpectedly pregnant with her daughter, Olivia. The news caused a minor earthquake in the village and was made all the more scandalous by Tilly’s refusal to name the father – a secret she continues to guard fiercely.
Tilly is easy-going, fun-loving, and proudly progressive. Her modern lifestyle and outspoken nature haven’t endeared her to everyone, especially her neighbour, Hilda Hollingsworth. The two women are notorious for their sharp exchanges, whether trading pointed remarks across the bar at The Oak & Vine or exchanging frosty glares across the village green. Tilly, for her part, revels in keeping Hilda on her toes.
For all her flaws – and she freely admits she has plenty – Tilly is a devoted and fiercely protective mother. Olivia is the centre of her world, and Tilly has done whatever necessary to keep the wolves from the door, even when times were tough.
Despite the whispers, raised eyebrows, and judgemental looks, Tilly Wainwright is, was, and always will be unapologetically Tilly Wainwright – confident, sexy, strong, and entirely herself.
