BIOGRAPHY: Born on Coronation Day in 1937 to local shopkeeper James Baxter and his wife Jemima, Elizabeth entered the world bearing the name of both her grandmother and the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth – later the Queen Mother. From the moment she arrived, her father lovingly called her “Queenie”, and it is a nickname that has clung to her for nearly ninety years. Possessing a sharp eye and an even sharper wit, she doesn’t suffer fools or buy into anyone’s nonsense. Yet beneath her no-frills exterior lies a warm, funny, and deeply caring woman who is “Queenie” to her friends and “Beth” to those who’ve dared to cross her.

In 1954, Queenie fell for Stanley Butler – the friend of William Granger, who was dating her best friend, Audrey. Their romance was brief and heady. After a single, brief encounter, Stanley vanished without a word, leaving Queenie to discover she was “in trouble”. When she confessed her situation to her mother, she was swiftly sent to Hope Mission, a convent known for dealing with “girls like her”. There, she gave birth to her daughter, Gail, only to have the baby taken from her and adopted out almost immediately. Queenie returned to Glendale carrying a grief she never shared, burying the trauma so deeply she would not speak of Gail again for decades.

Tragedy struck again in 1960 when her father died unexpectedly. With her mother sinking into depression, twenty-three-year-old Queenie took over the family shop, guiding it into a thriving local institution. As the years passed, and after the deaths of her mother and brother in the 1970s, Queenie’s role within Glendale shifted. Alone but resilient, she became a maternal figure to anyone without someone to rely on.

In 2024, after carrying her secret for seventy years, Queenie finally confided in Emma Blake, revealing the truth about Gail. Together, the two women have embarked on a mission to find the child Queenie never stopped loving, despite a lifetime spent pretending she hadn’t existed.
