BIOGRAPHY: A brusque woman, as wide as she is tall with a permanent scowl affixed to her forehead, Betty is someone the villagers of Glendale often take no notice of or actively try to avoid.

She married local lad Gerald Worchester at just seventeen, convinced she had achieved her life’s ambition of becoming a dutiful wife and mother. But as the years passed, the routine of domestic life left her feeling restless and unfulfilled. In 1977, her boredom ignited into a scandalous affair with wealthy Harold Bancroft – an indiscretion that sent shockwaves through Glendale. The liaison resulted in the birth of her third son, Gareth; the collapse of her marriage; and her swift ostracisation from the village, enforced by Harold’s furious queen bee wife, Judith. It also cemented her long-standing feud with Queenie Baxter, after Betty’s refusal to tell the truth left Queenie wrongly accused of being Harold’s mistress until the real story eventually emerged.

After Gerald’s death, Betty’s isolation deepened as the community continued to keep her at arm’s length. Gareth, devastated by the truth of his parentage, cut ties with her and moved away. Only the unwavering support of her best friend, Hilda Hollingsworth, saw Betty through her loneliest years.

In 2024, Betty surprised the village by extending an olive branch to both Queenie and Gareth. The latter accepted, returning to Glendale with his family after years apart, and mother and son have since begun the slow, careful work of rebuilding their bond. The truce with Queenie, however, was short-lived – shattered spectacularly over a “claggy trifle” – and the pair have happily resumed their regular hostilities.
