BIOGRAPHY: Deeply woven into the history of Glendale and Greystone Downs, Tom was the latest in a long line of Spencers to work the land. Raised on the family farm as the eldest child of Richard and Carol, he grew up with the weight of tradition on his shoulders. For generations, the Spencer family had been custodians of the farm, and from an early age, it seemed inevitable that Tom would one day take his place at the helm.

In 1999, a chance encounter changed the course of his young life. While queuing in the HMV store on Oxford Street, Tom met Kate, and an unexpected spark quickly grew into love, marriage, and eventually three children. When his parents later separated and his father moved to Scotland, Tom stepped up to run Greystone Downs. Though dedicated and hard-working, he often struggled under the financial and emotional strain of keeping the farm afloat, a burden that saw him struggle for years with his mental health.

What few ever knew was that Tom had spent his entire life wrestling with a truth he felt he could never say aloud – he was attracted to men. Raised in a tight-knit rural community where expectations were deeply entrenched, Tom learnt early to bury his feelings. But everything changed after a single, unexpected kiss with Lee Atkins. In 2024, Tom’s hidden desires finally overpowered his fears, and he began a secret affair with Lee. When he contracted an STI and scrambled to hide the truth from Kate, the fragile façade of his double life collapsed. His infidelity was publicly exposed, leaving him overwhelmed with shame and despair.

Tragically, struggling with depression and unable to cope with the fallout or the lifelong battle he had hidden from everyone around him, Tom took his own life in the barn at Greystone Downs, and his death left a profound mark on his wife, his family, and Glendale.
